What is Bone Marrow Concentrate?
Bone marrow is a soft, sponge-like tissue in the center of most bones that produces a large variety of cells including mesenchymal stem cells, white blood cells, red blood cells, platelets and growth factors. Mesenchymal stem cells, platelets, and growth factors make up a large portion of the repair mechanism that our body naturally uses to repair damaged tissues. These repair cells live inside all of us and are poised to leap into action when an injury occurs. As we age or if the injury is severe, we may not be able to recruit enough of these cells to the site of injury to fully repair the area. Our regenerative medicine procedures help overcome this problem by harvesting bone marrow from the iliac crests (an area on the back of the hip that contains a dense population of mesenchymal stem cells), concentrating them and then reinjecting them into the injured area using advanced imaging guidance. The goal of this procedure is to reduce pain and improve function by promoting the body's own natural healing mechanisms.
What are the benefits?
Benefits of bone marrow concentrate therapy offer our New York, NY patients a number of cutting-edge and natural benefits, including:
- Treatment for fractures and breaks that are slow to heal
- Accelerates body's rate of healing
- Addresses pain and mobility in joints
- Brings pain relief to injury site

Who is a candidate for Bone Marrow Concentrate?
There are many indications for the use of bone marrow concentrate in our regenerative medicine procedures. Bone marrow concentrate contains a very high concentration of healing cells that can help repair damaged tissue and support growth and revitalization by accelerating the body’s innate healing mechanisms. This level of treatment is typically used for more serious injuries, such as complete and partial tears of muscle, tendons and ligaments, or pain related to arthritis or other degenerative conditions. Depending on how severe your pathology is, your demographic information and the areas being treated, we can correlate this to our live outcome reporting tool to decide if you are a poor, fair, or good candidate for a bone marrow concentrate procedure. This treatment has been successful in relieving pain, reducing swelling, and enhancing healing, as well as helping individuals delay the need for joint replacement and invasive surgery. If you are interested in bone marrow concentrate procedures, please book a consultation with one of our physicians to see if you are a candidate.
How is a Bone Marrow procedure performed?
All of our bone marrow procedures are same-day procedures that are performed in our AAAASF surgical suite. Using live ultrasound and x-ray guidance, our physicians are able to safely locate the iliac crest. This is the area just above the back of your hip and pelvis where we harvest your bone marrow. Once located, we provide light sedation and anesthetize the area with local anesthetic to ensure maximal comfort for our patients. We then use a very thin needle and harvest bone marrow aspirate from just under the bony surface of the bone. This is the area where most of the mesenchymal stem cells are located and allows for a very high concentration of stem cells once we concentrate the bone marrow.
Bone marrow aspirate also contains a multitude of other cells including platelets, growth factors and cytokines that we then centrifuge and concentrate into bone marrow concentrate. After processing, our lab technicians also check the viability of the harvested stem cells with a cell counter, to ensure that we have a very high live concentration of autologous stem cells prior to injecting. After confirming the viability of your stem cells, our physicians use live imaging guidance to precisely inject your bone marrow concentrate into areas of damaged tissue. Our physicians take great care to maintain highly sterile conditions when harvesting, processing and injecting your stem cells to maintain stem cell viability, minimize infection, and ensure optimal outcomes. After the procedure, our patients recover in the recovery room and are then discharged the same day. The entire bone marrow stem cell harvest, processing and reinjection procedure occurs within one day and patients are able to walk home with minimal post-op downtime.
