Regenexx’s PRP Therapy: A Comprehensive Overview

Regenerative medicine  is gaining popularity in clinics worldwide due to its relatively fast and non-invasive approach to treating osteoarthritis, joint pain, tendon injuries, and other orthopedic conditions. Regenexx has developed an advanced version of Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) therapy, a leading treatment in the field that frequently offers an alternative to surgery. Regenexx providers, such as Dr. Matthew Kohler of Ospina Medical, are specially trained to deliver this premier and personalized therapy.

Understanding PRP Therapy

PRP therapy uses your body’s natural platelets to speed up the healing of injured joints, muscles, tendons, and ligaments. During the procedure, a small blood sample is taken and centrifuged to concentrate the platelets. This platelet-rich concentrate is then processed using proprietary laboratory steps and is re-injected into the target tissues. This releases growth factors that introduce reparative cells and promote healing over the coming weeks, months, and potentially years.

Initial Consultation and Preparation

Before starting PRP treatment, patients undergo a thorough consultation to gather medical history and assess conditions that might affect treatment outcomes. Dr. Kohler’s personalized approach involves meticulous planning to identify which tissues should be treated and with which serum concentrations, which are often higher than market standards. Imaging, such as X-Ray, MRI, and ultrasound monitoring, is typically performed to deliver optimal guidance for targeted treatment areas.

And not to mention… prior to receiving your precise and personalized therapy, our patients can expect to relax in our luxury IV-treatment room. What better than a panoramic view of Midtown Manhattan as you receive your blood draw and await preparation of the serum!

Procedure Day

On the day of the procedure, blood is drawn from the patient, similar to routine blood samples. This sample is processed and centrifuged into PRP, which takes approximately fifteen to thirty minutes. This resulting PRP is then refined under Regenexx’s proprietary processing steps to ensure both higher purity and concentration.. This concentrate is then injected into pre-identified target areas under ultrasound or fluoroscopic guidance. This entire procedure typically takes about an hour or more, depending on the extent of treatment.Moderate pain may be experienced during injections, but this is mitigated with light sedation and local anesthetic by our highly trained staff.

Post-Procedure Care

After the injection, patients may experience mild swelling and soreness, which should subside as the pain decreases. This discomfort typically lasts for up to a week or two before progress from the baseline starts to be seen. It's crucial to avoid over-the-counter or prescription anti-inflammatory medications post-procedure as they can disrupt the body's natural healing process and interfere with PRP's mechanism of action.

Recovery, Healing, and Results

After the first three to four weeks following PRP therapy, patients usually notice a gradual improvement in their pain symptoms. It's important to avoid overstraining the treated area and follow regular follow-up schedules to monitor recovery progress and promote long-term healing.

The full benefits of PRP therapy are often seen between two to six months after treatment; however, patients who respond particularly well may see a significant reduction in pain and an increase in function for up to the year or two after treatment. Of course, outcomes will vary based on overall health, the severity of the condition, and adherence to post-procedure recommendations.

Maintenance and Further Treatment

While many patients achieve significant relief from one PRP session, some may require follow-up treatments. Repeat treatments are generally the case with market standard PRP, but may be less likely with the enhanced Regenexx treatment. Additional sessions are determined based on the patient's progress and the severity of their condition.
