The inhalation of essential oils triggers your body to relax via the olfactory nerves. These nerves respond to volatile molecules, prompting signals to your brain's limbic system, which governs emotional states and stress responses. This means the oils can help moderate the impact of stressors. Essential oils can also be absorbed through the skin membranes, thereby entering the bloodstream and producing similar effects (albeit with a slight delay compared to the route of inhalation).

The volatile nature of essential oils allows for various uses. Many prefer adding a few drops into air diffusers, baths, or massage oils. In some cases of topical application, you must mix essential oils with a bulkier carrier oil, such as coconut, olive, or almond oil, to reduce the risk of adverse skin reactions associated with the potency of pure essential oils. Other safe methods include wearable accessories like keychains or bracelets, or aroma sticks for inhalation.

Essential Oils for Anxiety

There are numerous essential oils  known to help alleviate anxiety by inducing relaxation, improving mood, and stimulating various physiological responses. Here are a few noteworthy ones:   

  • Lavender: Known for inducing relaxation, lavender oil can reduce symptoms such as restlessness and depression-like behavior, helping to improve your overall mood. Research shows that using lavender oil can help reduce anxiety levels similarly to anti-anxiety medications like lorazepam.   
  • Bergamot: This essential oil, with its sweet orange scent, can effectively reduce anxiety and stress by lowering cortisol levels. Additionally, it can stimulate energy by enhancing blood circulation.   
  • Ylang Ylang: This essential oil promotes serenity by reducing tension, blood pressure, heart rate, and cortisol levels, helping guide individuals towards a tranquil state. It can also alleviate palpitations and boost self-esteem.   
  • Roman Chamomile: Historically used to calm nerves and relieve muscle spasms, Roman Chamomile has been found to be particularly effective in relaxing the smooth muscles in the intestines.   
  • Frankincense: Characterized by its earthy, warm scent, frankincense can lessen anxiety, activate the limbic system, and help overcome racing thoughts. It also acts as a sedative to relax both your body and mind.

In conclusion, aromatherapy offers numerous benefits with minimal risk as most essential oils are derived from all-natural sources. When purchasing essential oils, remember to check the ingredients list to ensure the best quality for optimal relaxation.
