Can Weight Loss Help Knee Osteoarthritis Pain?

Knee osteoarthritis is one of the most common reasons patients experience chronic joint pain, stiffness, swelling, and difficulty with daily activities. For some patients, knee pain makes it harder to walk, climb stairs, exercise, work, travel, or enjoy time with family.

While treatment may include physical therapy, injections, regenerative medicine, medication management, or other interventions, weight management can also be an important part of knee osteoarthritis care.

How weight affects knee osteoarthritis

The knees are weight bearing joints, meaning they carry a significant amount of the body’s load during standing, walking, stairs, and exercise. When excess weight is present, the knees may experience increased stress with every step.

The CDC states that people with overweight or obesity are more likely to develop knee osteoarthritis, and that extra weight can make knee or hip osteoarthritis pain worse.

This does not mean knee pain is always caused by weight. Many patients develop knee osteoarthritis due to age, genetics, prior injuries, sports, occupational stress, anatomy, or other factors. However, for patients who are also carrying excess weight, reducing joint load may help support pain relief and improved function.

Weight loss and knee pain research

Research has continued to explore the relationship between weight loss and knee osteoarthritis symptoms. In a 2024 clinical trial published in The New England Journal of Medicine, once weekly semaglutide was associated with greater reductions in body weight and knee osteoarthritis related pain compared with placebo in adults with obesity and knee osteoarthritis.

This finding does not mean GLP 1 medications are a replacement for orthopedic or pain management care. It does suggest that for some patients, weight management may be an important part of reducing knee pain and improving daily function.

How GLP 1 medications may help support knee pain care

GLP 1 medications are prescription medications that may help appropriate patients with weight management by affecting appetite, fullness, digestion, and blood sugar regulation. Certain medications in this category are approved for chronic weight management in adults with obesity or adults with overweight and at least one weight related condition, when combined with diet and physical activity.

In patients with knee osteoarthritis, GLP 1 medications may support care indirectly by helping reduce weight related strain on the knees. Less stress on the joint may make walking, strengthening, and rehabilitation more realistic.

Knee osteoarthritis treatment should be personalized

Knee arthritis is not the same for every patient. Some patients have mild cartilage changes but significant pain. Others have advanced arthritis but remain very functional. Imaging is helpful, but the full treatment plan should also consider symptoms, activity goals, inflammation, strength, alignment, medical history, and lifestyle.

A personalized knee pain plan may include:

  • Physical therapy or strengthening
  • Image guided injections
  • Viscosupplementation
  • Regenerative medicine options
  • Anti inflammatory lifestyle support
  • Medication management
  • Weight management support
  • Mobility and activity modification

For appropriate patients, GLP 1 medications may be one part of this larger plan.

The goal is better movement

The goal of knee osteoarthritis care is not just to reduce pain on paper. The goal is to help patients move better in real life.

That may mean walking farther, climbing stairs with less discomfort, returning to exercise, delaying more invasive interventions, or feeling more confident with daily movement.

For some patients, treating the knee directly is essential. For others, improving the environment around the knee, including body weight, strength, inflammation, and movement patterns, may be just as important.

Talk to your provider about GLP 1 today

If knee osteoarthritis is limiting your mobility or quality of life, talk to your provider about GLP 1 today. A medical provider can help determine whether weight management support may be appropriate as part of your personalized knee pain treatment plan.

GLP 1 medications are not right for everyone, but for the right patient, they may help support a more complete approach to pain, function, and long term joint health.
