How to Tell the Difference Between Back Pain and Sciatica

Back pain is one of the most common complaints we see at Ospina Medical, but not all back pain is created equal. Knowing whether you’re dealing with general lower back pain  or sciatica can make a big difference in how we treat it.

What is Sciatica?

Sciatica is caused by irritation or compression of the sciatic  nerve, which runs from your lower back down through your hips, legs, and feet. It’s usually caused by a herniated disc, spinal stenosis, or bone spur.

Signs You May Have Sciatica:

  • Sharp, shooting pain down one leg

  • Numbness or tingling in the leg or foot

  • Pain that worsens when sitting or standing

  • Weakness in the affected leg

When It’s Just Back Pain:

  • Pain remains localized to the lower back

  • Muscle stiffness or soreness after activity

  • Improves with stretching or rest

At Ospina Medical, Dr. Kohler uses state-of-the-art imaging and diagnostic techniques to pinpoint the root cause and tailor your treatment plan—whether that includes targeted nerve blocks, physical therapy, or regenerative options.
